R&B and Hip-Hop Still Lead American Listening—but Their Position Is Not Guaranteed

R&B and hip-hop remain the leading genre group in American music streaming. That position should not be mistaken for permanent ownership of the audience.

Luminate’s 2026 midyear report found that R&B and hip-hop remained the largest streaming category in the United States while continuing to lose some market share. At the same time, Latin and country music gained ground.

R&B’s cultural strength can sometimes conceal weaknesses in the business structure surrounding it. The genre produces influential artists, sounds, language and fashion, yet strong releases frequently arrive without sustained radio campaigns, patient artist development or meaningful editorial support.

A new singer does not have to be marketed as though R&B began yesterday. Context can make the introduction stronger. Listeners who appreciate Anita Baker, Sade, Luther Vandross, Maxwell or D’Angelo may connect with a current performer when the musical relationship is presented thoughtfully.

WPTG FM’s advantage is its ability to place new music beside the records that helped make it possible. R&B still possesses enormous power. The midyear numbers are not a reason to panic. They are a reason to stop taking the audience for granted.
