Kehlani's Grammy Victory Shows the Power of Letting an R&B Record Grow
By Penny Fontaine · 7/23/2026

Kehlani's "Folded" earned two major Grammy Awards in 2026.
Kehlani’s “Folded” did not need to shout to become one of R&B’s defining records.
The song earned Kehlani the 2026 Grammy Award for Best R&B Solo Performance. Its writers also received Best R&B Song.
The record’s strength comes from emotional precision. Kehlani does not perform the song as though heartbreak must always arrive through oversized production or nonstop vocal acrobatics. The tension is carried through phrasing, restraint and the feeling that the singer is attempting to maintain control while the relationship underneath the words continues to unravel.
Kehlani has spent much of her career developing that relationship with listeners. Her music speaks openly about desire, vulnerability, identity, disappointment and emotional accountability.
“Folded” also demonstrates why every modern R&B release should not be judged by whether it explodes during its first weekend. Records sometimes need time to travel.
Kehlani’s Grammy victories did not create the emotional power inside “Folded.” They acknowledged what listeners had already begun to feel.
