Kaylee Hottle Dies at 18, Leaving a Powerful Legacy of Deaf Representation in the Godzilla Franchise

Kaylee Hottle did not need a long speech to become the emotional center of a movie filled with giant creatures, collapsing cities and spectacular visual effects. Through American Sign Language, facial expression and a deeply believable connection with Kong, the young actress made audiences understand exactly what her character was feeling.

Hottle, known for playing Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, died following a car crash in Maryland on July 21, 2026. She was 18.

According to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, a single-vehicle collision on Windsor Road in Ijamsville involved a 1995 Honda Accord. Hottle was transported to a trauma center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Hottle was born into a multigenerational Deaf family and attended the Texas School for the Deaf. When audiences met Jia in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, the character was presented as a young Deaf orphan who communicated with Kong through sign language. Their relationship gave the film tenderness that its enormous battles could not provide on their own.

Hottle represented something more authentic: a Deaf actress playing a Deaf character whose identity was central to the story without becoming the entirety of it. Her casting received recognition for authentic disability representation.

She returned as Jia in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and earned a Saturn Award nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Film.
