Jill Scott recently did something increasingly unusual during a major concert. She asked the audience to put the phones away.
At Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre, approximately 3,000 concertgoers secured their devices inside Yondr pouches before entering the performance space. Instead of spending the evening filming or checking notifications, the audience had to experience the show while it was happening.
The result was reportedly intimate, joyful and deeply connected.
Jill Scott’s music has always depended on presence. Her performances are built around storytelling, phrasing, humor, sensuality, poetry and the emotional exchange between artist and audience. A Jill Scott concert is not simply a collection of songs. It is a conversation.
