CD Sales Are Rising Because Music Fans Still Want Something They Can Keep
By Penny Fontaine · 7/23/2026

Compact-disc sales rose sharply during the first half of 2026.
The compact disc was declared obsolete before listeners had finished deciding what ownership meant to them.
During the first half of 2026, American CD sales increased by approximately 16 percent, reaching 16.3 million units. That growth significantly outpaced vinyl’s reported increase of 2.4 percent during the same period.
Streaming offers immediate access. A CD offers possession. That difference has become more meaningful as listeners recognize that music available through a digital service is not always permanent. Albums can be removed, changed, or buried beneath a constant flow of new recommendations. A physical copy remains where the listener placed it.
CDs give younger fans another way to own album artwork, liner notes and a physical representation of their relationship with an artist. Some younger buyers reportedly purchase CDs even when they do not currently own a CD player.
K-pop releases contributed heavily to the 2026 growth, but Luminate reported that American CD sales would still have increased by 6.7 percent with K-pop removed.
