From a homeless shelter to a street sign in his honor — Detroit celebrates KEM's humanitarian legacy and 35 years of sobriety on his birthday, July 23.
In Detroit, the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Third Street is about to carry a new kind of weight. On July 23, 2026—a date that marks both his birthday and his 35th anniversary of sobriety—the city will officially dedicate an honorary street sign to Kim “KEM” Owens.
For the WPTG FM audience, KEM has long been a staple of the “Sound of 2 AM,” but this story is about more than his platinum records. It is a study in full-circle redemption. KEM’s journey began on these very streets, not in a studio, but in a homeless shelter.
